Captain Courtland T. Babcock, 88 of Holly Hill, passed away on Friday December 18, 2009. A Memorial Service will be held on Tuesday, December 29, 2009 at 11:00 am at St. James Episcopal Church, 44 S. Halifax Drive, Ormond Beach. Courtland was born on November 13, 1921 in Limon, Coast Rica to Louis and Katherine Babcock. Capitan Babcock graduated from Greenwich High School in Greenwich, CT in 1939. He then went on to attend Columbia University from 1939-1942 leaving to enroll in the Naval Aviation program shortly after Pearl Harbor. He then served in the United States Navy from 1942-1972. Mr. Babcock attained the rank of Captain as a Navy Pilot of multi-engine aircraft and in various management roles throughout the defense establishment. He was most proud of his service as a captain of the USS Tallahatchie County, an advanced aviation based support ship in the Mediterranean and as the Commanding Officer of the Naval Communications Station/ San Diego. After retiring form the Navy he was a FEMA executive and Director of Volunteer Services with the American Red Cross. Mr. Babcock was an avid golfer and served as an Executive Director for the Volusia Flagler Junior Golf Association, and was very active in the Forekids charities from 1991-1995. He and his wife Alma were also very devoted parishioners of St. James Episcopal Church, in Ormond Beach .He is preceded in death by his father Louis and Mother Katherine Babcock, daughter Andrea Babcock. Survivors include his wife of 58 years Alma Babcock, of Holly Hill, FL, sons Courtland T. Babcock II, of Hilton Head Island, SC, Douglas Babcock, of Plantation, FL, Daughter Tracy Hatalsky, of Ponte Vedra, FL, Brother James W. Babcock, of Glastonbury, CT, three grandchildren, and five great grandchildren, nephews Reggie and Jay Babcock, and many friends. Mr. Babcock led a life full of great achievements, and loved his family passionately. He will be remembered always and greatly missed.
