James Robert Steager, known to those in Daytona as “Minnesota Jim” and “Walking Jim” and at home in Minnesota as “Staggs,” age 55, passed away tragically on Saturday, December 19, 2009. A funeral mass in his honor will be held Saturday, Dec. 26, 2009; 11:00 AM at Epiphany Catholic Church 201 Lafayette St., Port Orange, 32127.
Jim was born in Grand Rapids, Minnesota to Robert and Lenore Steager, He dedicated 30 years to working for the DM & IR Railroad as a conductor and brakeman. He came to the Daytona Beach area after his retirement and enjoyed his days walking, swimming in the ocean, and sending time with his friends at the “Pier” and “Metz”. He made lifetime friendships wherever he went, was an avid reader and enjoyed traveling. He loved and was loved by his family and friends and will be greatly missed. His parents and a brother in law preceded him in death and he leaves behind to cherish his memory 3 sisters; Barbara Steager Nelson and her children; Libby Benton, Jake Nelson and Meg Nelson, Marjorie Steager Bartz and her sons Nicholas Bartz, and Adam Bartz, and Roberta Steager Serich, and her son Luke Serich and Rikki Pascuzzi, and their three children Harley, Gracie, and Jud.
